MOSCOW, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - A man was jailed for 15 years in Moscow on Wednesday over a failed suicide bombing on Red Square.

Investigators said Ilyas Saidov, from the country’s volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, was part of a group of militants who conspired to launch the attack on New Year's Eve 2010.

Saidov was arrested as he tried to flee Moscow after one of the would-be suicide bombers was killed when the explosives to be used in the attack accidentally detonated in a hotel in the Russian capital.

Investigators said Saidov cooperated during the investigation into the plot, also disclosing information on the murders of high-ranking Dagestani officials, the Rapsi legal news agency reported.

"My client immediately took the decision not to appeal the ruling," Saidov's lawyer, Murad Aliev, said.

Saidov’s role in the lead up to the attack was to monitor the transport of the explosives, investigators said.

Russia has been tackling a low-level Islamist insurgency in its mainly Muslim North Caucasus region for over a decade. Militants have attacked Moscow on a number of occasions, most recently when 35 people were killed during an airport suicide bombing in January 2011.
