The celebrations have been shifted to July 7, according to the Gregorian or New Style calendar. In some regions, however, it is still marked on the shortest night in June, according to the old calendar.
The summer solstice is an important astronomical and geographical event of the solar system. This day marks the beginning of summer in the Earth’s northern hemisphere and the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere.
The celebration of the summer solstice is an ancient practice. Photo: Celebrating Ivan Kupala Day on Krasny Lug, a site near Maloyaroslavets of the Kaluga Region where the holiday is traditionally marked.
Ivan Kupala Day is associated with natural elements: fire (usually in two forms, earthly and heavenly – the sun) and water. On Kupala Night it is customary to light special bonfires.
Beliefs and rituals related to plants are also very popular. Throughout centuries, people have worn flower belts and carried grass garlands on their hair and body and have sung and danced in a ring during the celebrations.
One of the traditions of the holiday is seeking blooming ferns. According to Ancient Slav beliefs, a blooming fern plant not only fulfils wishes of the owner, but also helps find treasures.
