CAIRO (Sputnik) – Four Egyptian nationals were injured near the ancient Karnak temple in the southern city of Luxor when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the site. No tourists were reported among the victims in the North African country whose economy relies heavily on tourism.
"The president called on the security forces to increase their presence in public places, including at archaeological monuments, to prevent terrorist and extremist organizations to repeat such cruelty," Sisi's press service announced.
A statement provided to RIA Novosti cited President Sisi as reiterating his commitment to countering terror activities.
Local media reported that three unidentified men carried out the Karnak temple attack, with one of them setting off an explosive belt. Police reportedly killed two suspected militants, injured one and arrested two more with links to the perpetrators.
The Islamic State (ISIL) extremist group has claimed responsibility for the act, according to Egyptian media.
