A large number of Italian companies are interested in Pakistan as an investment destination because of its vast supply of cheap labor and potential to be a regional hub for exports.

More than 40 Italian companies have expressed their willingness to explore the opportunities in the Pakistani market, said Italian Ambassador to Pakistan Stefano Pontecorvo on the first day of the Pakistan Trade Investment Forum.

The forum took place today in Rome at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign with the collaboration of UNIDO, the UN agency for industrial development and Italy's Foreign Ministry. Energy, infrastructures, agriculture, pharmaceutics, automobile and textile industries were on the agenda of the event.

Punjab Board of Investment and Trade CEO Amena Cheema noted that there is great potential for cooperation through joint ventures between small and medium enterprises on both sides, particularly in the field of Information and Communications Technology. She also spoke about the demand of Italian products in Pakistan and elaborated on the growing importance of the country with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor underway.

According to UNIDO, Pakistan has great potential for Italian companies. Work is ongoing to create a close link between the business associations working in Pakistan's major cities and promote investment and trade with Italy, also by involving the Pakistani business community in Italy, which is often eager to reinvest in its home country.

Many meetings between business and government representatives are expected to take place on the second day of event.

Italy has close economic and political ties with Pakistan. The current trade between the two countries is around $300 million. Italy's Foreign Direct Investment in Pakistan is around $200 million which shows a great potential ahead and needs to be enhanced.
