GENEVA (Sputnik) – Humanitarian deliveries to Syria are "slowing down," but the United Nations hopes to evacuate nearly 500 sick, wounded and their families from four besieged towns, a humanitarian adviser to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Thursday.
"The one positive thing we are hoping to do in the very near future is a major evacuation of wounded, sick and their relatives from four towns – Madaya, Zabadani, Foua and Kefraya. Altogether it could be up to 500 people. It’s one of the biggest medical evacuations that have been planned," Jan Egeland told reporters.
"April was looking to be our best month. It’s not looking so at the moment," Egeland said.
He specified that, with 45,000 people in Tir Maaliah and Afrin gaining relief this month, a total of 446,000 Syrians have been accessed since the start of the year.
