NEW YORK (Sputnik) — More than a hundred US Army Apache helicopters will be refurbished to empower the platforms with greater combat capabilities, the Boeing Company said in a statement on Thursday.
"Boeing continues its role as the United States’ leading provider of attack helicopters with a contact to remanufacture 117 AH-64D Apaches to the new, more capable AH-64D model," the statement noted.
The agreement, which also includes the acquisition of Longbow Crew Trainers, logistical support and spares, carries a total contract value of about $1.5 billion, Boeing pointed out.
The Apache AH-64 has been described as a flying tank. It is a helicopter designed to survive heavy attack and is armed to inflict massive damage on ground forces.
The AH-64 is designed to attack day or night, including in unfavorable weather and poor visibility.
