Nine Killed, At Least 760 Injured in Latest Earthquake on Kyushu Island
At Least 9 people died and 760 were wounded as a result of the latest powerful earthquake on Japan’s Kyushu Island, the same island that was struck by a 6.5-magnitude quake on Thursday, the national NHK broadcaster reports.
TOKYO (Sputnik) – Earlier, the Kyodo news agency reported that the death toll from the quake was 3 people, adding that over 470 people have been taken to the hospital.
According to Kyodo, over 200,000 houses were left without electricity in the area affected by the latest earthquake in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture.
At least 11 people were reportedly buried under the rubble of a collapsed Kyushu Tokai University dormitory building.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 16:25 GMT on Friday about 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) from the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture. USGS put the quake's magnitude at 7.0.
On Thursday, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck to the east of Kumamoto city (the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture) on Japan’s Kyushu Island. It was followed by multiple aftershocks. At least nine people were killed and over 760 were hospitalized.
