The European Union has spent about 10 billion euros ($11.34 billion at the current exchange rates) from the union's budget to support refugees arriving in the bloc, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Tuesday.

STRASBOURG (Sputnik) — Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty in stable and wealthy EU member states.

"All in all, the European Union has mobilized more than 10 billion euros from its own budget in favor of the refugees," Juncker said.

More than 1.8 million migrants entered the European Union in 2015, according to the EU border management agency Frontex.
