The number of victims from this weeks’ deadly earthquake in Ecuador has climbed to 553 people, the Latin American republic’s prosecutor general said Wednesday.

Magnitude 5.5 Quake Strikes Ecuadorian Coast

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The previous official death toll stood at 525 people.

The prosecutor general added that over 4,000 have been wounded in the quake, and around 100 remained missing.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck close to the town of Pedernales on Saturday, with the death toll climbing on a daily basis ever since.

The earthquake caused damage to at least 805 buildings.
