COVID-19 Live Updates: Brazil's Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses 100,000

The global death toll from the novel coronavirus has topped 720,000; almost 19.3 million cases of the infection have been detected, and over 11.6 million of those patients have recovered, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The United States still has the highest case count in the world, with 4,941,635 COVID-19 cases, including 161,347 who have died and 1,623,870 who have reportedly recovered.

COVID-19 cases in England may be levelling off despite a recent spike in the number of people who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reported earlier.

BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) - Mexico's COVID-19 tally has topped 475,000 cases after another 6,495 people have tested positive in the past 24 hours, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said.

A total of 695 patients have died over the same period.

"As of 8 August, 475,902 coronavirus cases have been confirmed, and another 89,025 are being suspected. A total of 52,006 deaths have been confirmed, and 318,638 people have recovered", Lopez-Gatell tweeted late on Saturday.

The occupancy rates for regular hospital beds and those with lung ventilators stand at 42 percent and 36 percent, respectively, according to the official.

A day before, the country reported 6,717 new cases and 794 fatalities.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United States' COVID-19 tally has surpassed 5 million, according to The New York Times' case count.

The Johns Hopkins University’s data shows 4,989,976 cumulative cases, including more than 1.6 million recoveries and over 162,000 deaths.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Brazil's COVID-19 tally has topped 3 million cases, and the death toll has exceeded 100,000, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 3,012,412 people in the country have contracted the virus. Of them, over 2 million have recovered, and 100,477 have died.

In the past 24 hours, the country has recorded 49,970 coronavirus cases and 905 related fatalities.

ROME (Sputnik) - Italy's coronavirus count has crossed the quarter-of-a-million threshold, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

The number of deaths has passed 35,000, while almost 202,000 people have recovered.

Nearly 13,000 patients are isolating at home, while 771 are receiving treatment in hospitals, 43 of them are in intensive care.

The health authority has estimated that roughly 1.5 million people in Italy, or 2.5 percent of the population, have immunity against the virus. It conducted 64,660 seroprevalence tests from May 25 to July 15.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Another 12 coronavirus patients died in the Russian capital in the past day, taking the death toll to 4,572, the COVID-19 response center said on Saturday.

Fourteen coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in Moscow on Friday, 12 on Thursday and 13 on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - More than 284,000 new coronavirus cases were reported worldwide over the past 24 hours, and the total tally reached 19.1 million, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday.

Over the past day, 284,441 new cases were reported to the WHO, and the overall number reached 19,187,943 since the start of the health crisis.

At the same time, 6,565 new coronavirus-related fatalities were registered globally over the given period, taking the overall death toll to 716,075.

According to Paris authorities, wearing of masks will be mandatory outdoors in busy areas of the city (along banks of River Seine, at open-air markets, at Canal St Martin) starting from Monday.

This order applies to people aged 11 and older and will be in place for one month, a statement by the Paris prefecture said, as quoted by Reuters.

Another 58,173 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in the United States on Friday, bringing the total past 4.9 million, according to Johns Hopkins University.

"The first case of COVID-19 in US was reported 198 days ago on 22.01.2020. Yesterday, the country reported 58,173 new confirmed cases and 1,243 deaths," it said.

The country is expected to cross the 5 million threshold in the coming days. It leads the world both in terms of coronavirus cases and deaths estimated at over 161,300.

Overall, there have been 19.4 million cases confirmed globally and almost 721,800 people have died from virus-related complications. Another 11.7 million have recovered.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Russia has increased by 5,212 to 882,347 in the last 24 hours, the response centre said on Saturday.

"In the last 24 hours, there have been 5,212[newly] confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection in 85 regions, including 1,334 detected cases (25.6%) without clinical implications," the center said in a statement, adding that the total number of cases has risen to 882,347.

The growth rate of COVID-19 cases is at 0.6 percent.

The death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia has reached 14,854, with 129 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours, the response centre said.

"We have confirmed 129 fatalities in the last 24 hours ... [Some] 14,854 people have died across Russia during the entire period [of the pandemic]," the center said in a statement.

Moscow has recorded 14 new deaths from COVID-19.
