India's northern state of Uttarakhand has been put on high alert after the breaking of a part of Nanda Devi glacier due to a massive flood, the Office of Relief Commissioner said on Sunday.

India’s Chamoli district magistrate has instructed officials to evacuate people living in villages on the banks of the Dhauli Ganga River amid a massive flood, according to the ANI news outlet.

A large glacier broke in India's northern state of Uttarakhand, causing an avalanche near the Rishiganga hydropower project.

Hundreds of Indo-Tibetal Border Police personnel have been rushed to carry out a rescue operation, according to reports.

Casualties are feared.

Fifty people are feared dead as a result of the breaking of Nanda Devi glacier in India's northern state of Uttarakhand, sources in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) told Sputnik on Sunday.

According to the sources, the victims were trapped in a tunnel at the Rishi Ganga power project site when the glacier struck.

Ten bodies have been recovered so far, police told the New 18 broadcaster.

About 150 people are missing.

“The comforting news is that the flow of the Alaknanda River outside [the city of] Nandprayag has returned to normal. The water level in the river is now 1 metre above normal,” Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that he was in constant touch with the authorities in the northern state of Uttarakhand to receive updates on the developments in the area affected by the breach of Nanda Devi glacier.

"[I] Am constantly monitoring the unfortunate situation in Uttarakhand. India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone’s safety there. Have been continuously speaking to senior authorities and getting updates on NDRF deployment, rescue work and relief operations," Modi wrote on Twitter.

More than 150 people are feared missing in India's northern state of Uttarakhand after a part of Nanda Devi glacier broke off due to a massive flood on Sunday morning, national media reported.

According to the PTI news agency, citing the State Disaster Response Force, these people may have been directly affected while working at the Rishi Ganga power project site.
