Signing the bill last Thursday, Biden called the new legislation “historic” and capable of "rebuilding the backbone" of the nation, while also giving working people "a fighting chance".

Sputnik is live from Washington, DC, where US President Joe Biden is giving remarks on the implementation of the "American Rescue Plan".

The nearly $2 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, signed on 11 March, provides a one-time $1,400 paycheck for US citizens making less than $75,000 a year and married couples that make less than $150,000.

The US economy shrank 3.5% in 2020 due to the restrictive measures imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The restrictions saw millions of Americans lose their jobs.
