The new round of US sanctions to be announced against Russia later this week will target government officials, financial institutions, and state-owned enterprises, the White House said Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Washington authorised the State Department to provide $100 million in additional defence aid to Ukraine. The supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine is a mistake, it increases casualties, but does not affect the outcome of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, the Russian military has said.
Russia launched a military operation last month with the stated goal of putting an end to war crimes committed by Ukrainian troops against civilians during an eight-year offensive against Donbas. The Russian Defence Ministry said the special operation, which targets Ukrainian military infrastructure, aims to "demilitarise and de-Nazify" Ukraine. Moscow has said it has no plans to occupy the country.

Biden Warned Xi of Consequences if China Supports Russia - Sherman
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have warned President Xi Jinping and other Chinese senior officials of the consequences and retaliation from the United States if Beijing supports Russia over Ukraine, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said in a congressional testimony on Wednesday.
"The president has been very direct with Xi Jinping that there will be consequences if China continues to support [Russian President Vladimir] Putin," Sherman told the US House Foreign Affairs Committee. "This is a very serious matter that we take quite seriously."
Sherman acknowledged that the Biden administration was also "deeply concerned' about the developing strategic alignment that Moscow and Beijing jointly announced on 4 February and she said they had communicated these concerns to the Chinese government.

Biden: US, Allies to Continue to Ratchet Up Economic Costs on Russia and Further Increase Economic Isolation
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States and its allies will continue to ratchet up economic costs on Russia and further increase its economic isolation in response to the country's special military operation in Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday.
“[T]ogether with our allies and our partners, we are going to keep raising the economic costs and ratchet up the pain for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and further increase Russia's economic isolation,” Biden said in an address to the North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) Legislative Conference.
He added: "Our sanctions are lucky to wipe out the last 15 years of Russia's economic gains and because we have cut Russia off from importing technologies like semiconductors and encryption security and critical components of quantum technology that they need to compete in the 21st century. We are going to stifle Russia's ability as economy to grow for years to come."
Biden also said that he had signed an executive order earlier in the day to send more anti-tank Javelin missiles to Ukraine.
