Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in late February after the Donetsk and Lugansk People's republics appealed for help to defend them against Kiev aggression.
Russian armed forces and Donbass militia continue their advance as part of the special operation in Ukraine, putting pressure on the Ukrainian military. Previously, they liberated the city of Mariupol.
The Azovstal steel plant remains the last stronghold in Mariupol of Ukrainian nationalists - including members of the infamous Azov neo-Nazi battalion. Over the past two days, more than 80 civilians have been evacuated from the grounds of the Azovstal plant by Russian troops acting under instructions from Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

US Military Much More Concerned About China Than Russia, Air Force Chief Notes
China poses a much more concerning long-term challenge and threat to the strategic capabilities of the United States than Russia, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told an audience at the Brookings Institution on Monday.

"Of the two I am much more concerned about China than Russia," Kendall said. "They have the resources, they have the capability [and] they have the intent."

China has the time to mature the long-term military capabilities that are designed to defeat the long-term US capability to project its power around the world, Kendall explained.

"China has the ambition to be the great power on the face of the earth. They have the ambition to be the great global power and to do that they have to basically displace the United States," he said.

Kendall said he did not think China was interested in any territorial expansion but that they were interested in having as much global influence as possible so that they could set the rules for the global economy.

Asked about US President Joe Biden’s general view on NATO enlargement, she noted that Biden supports the alliance's open door policy. He also supports all those who have aspirations to join the alliance, she added.

US Plans to Return Embassy to Kiev as Other Countries Already Reopening Their Missions
The US embassy in Ukraine is hoping to return to Kiev in late May as European countries' missions are already resuming their operation in the Ukrainian capital.

Last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the embassy would reopen in Kiev in a couple of weeks.
"Today is my first day back to Ukraine and we are doing it as a day trip. We expect to continue to do day trips [from Poland to Lviv] for the next week or two, and then we very much hope that the conditions will permit to go back into Kiev by the end of the month," US Charge d'Affaires Kristina Kvien said on Monday during a press conference in Lviv broadcast on social media.

When asked if she could get to Kiev immediately, the diplomat replied that she is following instructions from security specialists and will return to the capital once they give the green light.

Meanwhile, several European countries announced on Monday their embassies are reopening in Kiev, including Hungary, Cyprus and Sweden.

"Like other EU countries, we have decided to bring back to Kiev the Hungarian embassy that was temporarily transferred to Lvov," Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in a video address posted on social media, adding that the physical part of the relocation was done on the weekend and the embassy is now working in Kiev.

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde tweeted that her country's mission will reopen in Kiev on Wednesday and thanked Poland for temporarily hosting the mission.

The Cypriot Foreign Ministry also announced that its mission will begin gradual resumption of operations in Kiev, suspended on 26 February, starting this Tuesday. Denmark and South Korea announced on Monday reopening their mission in Kiev as well.

Some countries did not wait that long, as the French Foreign Ministry announced transferring the country's embassy in Ukraine back to Kiev from Lvov in mid-April.

Ukraine May Extend General Mobilisation, Military Says
General mobilisation in Ukraine may be extended beyond 24 May if hostilities continue, Roman Horbach, the director for personnel at the headquarters of Ukrainian land forces, said on Monday.

"Mobilisation was announced on 24 February for three months. This does not mean, however, that that's when it will end. It will depend on the prevailing situation. If there is the need to replenish the troops, the country's leadership may extend the deadline… If hostilities persist, I am convinced that the leadership will prolong the mobilisation," Horbach told a briefing.

He noted that mobilisation is still underway, but at a considerably slower pace, given that all units are currently fully manned to perform combat operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared general mobilisation immediately after Russia launched its military operation on 24 February. Ukraine has four tiers of mobilisation. The third tier launched in early April, applying to those considered the country's "military reserve," namely men liable for service who graduated from military departments of universities.

The fourth tier is the "public reserve," or those who have no age and physical limitations to undertake military service. This includes people with no combat experience who can be sent to join military units when a conflict enters a critical stage.

German Foreign Minister Planning to Visit Ukraine 'In The Future'
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday she is planning to visit Ukraine sometime in the future, noting that she originally planned to go after German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
"Yes, I will travel [to Ukraine] as well. I have even planned the trip. I agreed with the president that he would go first ... but later, unfortunately, the president's invitation was revoked. But this does not mean that I will not go in the future," Baerbock told German public broadcaster ARD.

In April, German daily Bild reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had refused to host Steinmeier in Kiev due to his "close connections" to Russia in recent years. Steinmeier later confirmed that he wanted to travel to Ukraine together with other European leaders but his visit was not wanted in Kiev.

Russian Defence Ministry: Over 100 People Rescued From Azovstal Since Saturday
The Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol was left by 101 hostages over the weekend, with 32 of them deciding to stay in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), the Russian Defence Ministry said.

Eleven rescued citizens made a voluntary decision to remain in the Donetsk People's Republic," the ministry told reporters on Sunday.

Another 69 civilians decided to go to Ukraine and were transferred to the officials of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. They left for Zaporozhye in a car convoy. The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that the convoy is being protected by Russian troops.

Ukrainian Forces Leave Bodies of Killed Soldiers in Battlefield, Lugansk People's Militia Says
The Ukrainian troops are not trying to take away the bodies of their dead personnel, a soldier of the People's Militia of the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) said on Monday.

"They [the Ukrainian troops] do not pull them [the bodies] out... There are hundreds of them lying all over the fields," the soldier told journalists.

The soldier said that this might have to do with the obligation of the Ukrainian authorities to grant compensation to the families of killed military personnel. Until the body is found, the serviceman is considered missing.

"Our people are burying [the Ukrainian soldiers]... I do not know how they will identify them afterwards," he added.
Russia started its special military operation in Ukraine on 24 February. The Russian defence ministry said its main goal is to liberate the eastern region of Donbass, which comprises the LPR and the Donetsk People's Republic.

EU to Halt Russian Coal Imports in Summer - German Chancellor
The European Union is set to cease coal imports from Russia this summer, intending to phase out Russia oil supply until the end of 2022 and "severely" reduce gas imports, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told The Indian Express media outlet on Monday.

"Many countries have joined these sanctions, even if this necessarily implies economic costs for ourselves. We are furthermore now implementing a very ambitious policy to reduce our dependency on the import of fossil fuels from Russia. We will stop the import of Russian coal this summer, we will phase out Russian oil until the end of the year and will reduce gas imports from Russia severely," Scholz said in an interview.

Ahead of Scholz's upcoming meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 May in Berlin, the chancellor also said that concluding an India-EU Free Trade Agreement will be an "important step."

On 8 April, the EU approved the 5th package of sanctions against Russia over the military operation in Ukraine, including a ban on purchasing, importing or transferring Russian coal and other solid fossil fuels into the EU, on providing access to EU ports to vessels registered under the flag of Russia, and further export bans targeting jet fuel and other goods such as quantum computers and advanced semiconductors, high-end electronics, software, sensitive machinery and transportation equipment.
