Russia does not threaten either the United States or its European allies, while it is making every effort to prevent escalation of the Ukrainian conflict, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said in an interview.

Antonov also stressed that any accusations against Moscow of its "aggressive nuclear rhetoric" are unfounded, and that Kiev started these "unhealthy speculations about unleashing nuclear war."

Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Xinhua that the United States and NATO should stop pouring weapons into Ukraine if they actually seek to bring the conflict to an end.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February, amid intensifying attacks of Kiev's troops against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR). President Putin stressed that the op was started to stop the eight-year-long war in Donbass, noting that Russia's goal is "demilitarisation and denazification".

White House: US Did Not Provide Ukraine Specific Intel to Target Russia's Moskva Warship

The United States did not provide Ukraine with specific intelligence to allegedly target the Moskva warship, such reporting in US media is inaccurate, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.

"Well, let me first say, to speak to the reports, they're inaccurate," Psaki told reporters during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One. "We did not provide Ukraine with specific targeting information for the Moskva, we were not involved in the Ukrainians decision to strike the ship or in the operation they carried out. We had no prior knowledge of Ukraine's intent to target the ship."

On Thursday, The New York Times reported, citing US officials, that the US provided Ukraine with intelligence to target Russia's flagship Moskva in the Black Sea in April, which, according to Moscow, sank on its way to the port of Sevastopol after a fire led to the explosion of ammunition. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby has denied reports on the US intelligence assistance to Ukraine to target the flagship.

Ukraine has a greater level of intelligence than the United States and they have their own intelligence capabilities to track and target Russian naval vessels, Psaki said.

However, Psaki also said the United States does provide a range of intelligence to help Ukrainian forces understand the threat posed by Russian ships in the Black Sea and to help them prepare to defend themselves against potential sea-based assaults.

Zelensky Invites Germany's Scholz to Visit Kiev on May 9 Amid Diplomatic Scandals

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has invited German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to visit Kiev on the Victory Day on May 9 following recent diplomatic scandals between the two countries.

"Speaking of Olaf Scholz… he is invited to come to Ukraine. He can make this very powerful political step to come here on the ninth of May, to Kiev. I am not explaining the significance, I think you are cultured enough to understand why," Zelensky said at a virtual event held by the British think tank Chatham House.

According to Zelensky, he extended this invitation in a phone conversation with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on May 5.

Zelensky talked with Steinmeier following a series of political and diplomatic gaffes, including Kiev's rejection to allow Steinmeier to visit the country over his alleged Russian ties. On Tuesday, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrij Melnyk called Scholz an "offended liver sausage," a German idiom which means to sulk for no good reason.

The United States is ready to explore various options to help Kiev during Russia's special military operation, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Friday, when asked whether Washington is considering writing off Ukraine's external debt.

"We're very open to anything that would help the Ukrainians rebuild their country, obviously fight against the invasion of Russia. The breakaway state of Transnistria (PMR) adheres to neutrality when it comes to the situation in Ukraine, President Vadim Krasnoselsky said on Friday.

"What is happening between Russia and Ukraine is a tragedy for me. Transnistria adheres to neutrality in the situation in Ukraine, the PMR is not dangerous for its neighbors - neither for Ukraine, nor for Moldova," Krasnoselsky told reporters.

US President Joe Biden on Sunday will attend a virtual G7 meeting joined by Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky, CNN reported a National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson as saying on Friday.

EU 'Fully Understands' Members' Constraints Over Russian Oil Embargo

The European Union "fully understands" the constraints some member states have over the commission's proposal for an embargo on Russian oil since several countries are heavily dependent on Moscow for the energy sources, European Commission chief spokesman Eric Mamer said on Friday.

"We fully understand that certain member states are in a very specific situation due to their geography, due to their dependency on Russian pipeline gas and petroleum products, and we had taken these concerns into account in our proposal," Mamer told reporters at the EC midday briefing.

The EU is trying to address the issue of the heavy dependency of some member countries on the Russian energy supplies, he noted.

"We understand that there are specific situations and constraints on Hungary and some other member states, and we are trying to address them," Mamer added.

Earlier in the day, a source told Sputnik that EU ambassadors are meeting on Friday to discuss the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, with six member states expressing objections to different aspects of the proposed oil embargo.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced the sixth package of anti-Russia sanctions, including a gradual Russian oil embargo. Some European countries that heavily depend on the Russian oil, such as Hungary and Slovakia, may get an exemption from the embargo.

Spain Not Considering Expulsion of Russian Ambassador

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Friday that the Russian ambassador in Madrid is the only contact with Russia and Spain is not planning to expel him over Ukraine.

Spain ordered dozens of Russian diplomats and embassy staff in Madrid to leave last month as fighting in Ukraine intensified.

Albares told Radio 4 that Yuri Korchagin’s presence in Spain demonstrated that the path of dialogue remained open, although "there is practically no contact with him."

The minister said that Spain was committed to bolstering the eastern NATO flank and sending human and military resources to the countries bordering Russia as a way of protecting Spain and its own borders.

Authorities in Ukrainian capital of Kiev have decided not to celebrate the Victory Day on May 9, which commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, as martial law remains in effect there, the city council said on Friday.

"The city will not organize festive events on May 9. And while martial law is still being in effect, mass gatherings are prohibited," the city council said on Telegram.

The city authorities will also step up patrols throughout the Ukrainian capital, however, everybody will be able to lay floral tributes, the council added.

EU 'Forgot' About Ukrainian Refugees - Serbian Interior Minister

Europe seems to have forgotten about the issue of Ukrainian refugees caused by the ongoing conflict as it has failed to develop a united policy on the matter, Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on Friday.

"So, in the case of Ukraine, the refugee crisis did not disappear. What I asked for is a united stance, to tell us if the refugees will be accepted in Europe or not?" Vulin told the Euractiv news portal.

The minister went on to say that the bloc does not have a united policy on the migration issue, wondering about the fate of Ukrainian refugees in Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece.

"Europe is repeating the mistake it made from the outset of the refugee crisis. It does not have a single policy and leaves each country alone to deal with the refugee crisis," Vulin added, as quoted by the news portal.

Only 14% of Austrians Support Their Country Joining NATO - Poll

Only 14% of Austrians are in favor of Austria joining NATO, while 75% of respondents are against the country's membership in the alliance, a poll published by Austrian news agency APA said on Friday.

The poll also showed that the majority of Austrians are skeptical about Ukraine's accession to the European Union, as this idea was supported only by 38% of respondents, while 46% were against it. The rest of the respondents did not express opinion on the issue.

Fifty-two percent of people believe Austria is protected by its neutrality, while 40% say neutrality does not protect Austria from military threats. According to the poll, 83% of the respondents are in favor of closer coordination between EU member states in the field of security and defenсe.

The poll surveyed 1,000 people.

NATO Chief of Staffs to Meet on 19 May to Discuss Situation in Ukraine

"NATO’s highest Military Authority, the Military Committee, will meet in person on 19 May 2022, in Brussels, Belgium. Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the Military Committee, will preside over the meeting, which will be attended by the Allied Chiefs of Defence," the alliance said in a statement.

Three member stats — Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Hungary — mainly disagree on the timeline for the oil embargo implementation, the source explained, while Greece, Malta and Cyprus have issues with the aspects regarding the transfer of Russian oil with vessels under their flag.

The meeting is expected to be long, the source added, noting that it is not clear if there is an agreement on Friday, as there are a lot of issues to solve with these countries.

Full Embargo on Russian Oil to Be Imposed by EU in Nine Months, EU Economic Commissioner Says

"Local media continue repeating the [American] administration's odious accusations that our country is allegedly violating the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Russian Defence Ministry has said the guided missile cruiser Moskva sank on its way to the port of Sevastopol for repairs on April 13 after a fire led to the explosion of ammunition. Washington and Kiev, however, have repeatedly claimed that the ship sank as the result of two Ukrainian anti-ship missiles.

The report said on Thursday, citing two senior US officials, that Ukraine already had targeting data on the Moskva warship and the United States only confirmed it was accurate, but other officials told the newspaper that US intelligence was critical to the alleged strike.

One official said the United States helped with more than just confirming the ship's location, according to the report.
