Since the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in late February, the West has imposed several tranches of unprecedented sanctions against Russia which have had a serious effect on the world's economy, and supply chains in particular.
As Russian armed forces and allied militia groups of the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk continue their advance in Ukraine, Kiev forces regularly carry out attacks against civilians in Donbass.
Amid ongoing hostilities in Ukraine's eastern and south-eastern territories, officials from both Ukraine and Russia are working to ensure safe passage of vessels carrying grain, corn, and other agricultural products from Ukrainian ports in line with the UN-mediated deal signed by Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul on 22 July.

Pope Francis Welcomes Start of Grain Exports From Ukrainian Ports
Pope Francis has welcomed the launch of the export of grain from the Ukrainian ports, calling it "a sign of hope."

"I want to welcome with satisfaction the departure of the first ships loaded with grain from the ports of Ukraine. This step demonstrates that it is possible to dialogue and to reach concrete results for everyone’s benefit. Therefore, this event also presents itself as a sign of hope, and I sincerely hope that, following in this direction, there might be an end to combat and that a just and lasting peace might be reached," the pontiff said during his traditional Sunday address to believers from the window of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican.

On July 22, the UN-brokered Black Sea grain initiative was signed by Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey to ensure that food and fertilizer exports reach those in need from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea – Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Yuzhne. Under the agreement, cargo carriers will be guided by Ukrainian vessels into international waters of the Black Sea, avoiding mined areas, and will then proceed toward the Bosphorus Strait along an established corridor.
