LIVE UPDATES: 138 Earthquakes Recorded in Central Turkey Over Last 27 Hours - EMSC

The quake was felt in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, according to residents who spoke with Sputnik. It was also felt in Damascus and Latakia in Syria, according to a local newspaper. Israelis in Tel Aviv also reported feeling the quake. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake was felt in Egypt, Georgia, Romania.
A massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Kahramanmaras Province, central Turkey, at 01:17 GMT on Monday. The quake was recorded roughly 15 miles 24 kilometers underground and was felt in at least six nearby provinces (Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Diyarbakir, Malatya and Sanliurfa).
The quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, with the strongest one having a magnitude of 6.6.
Dozens of buildings have collapsed across Turkey, and the death toll continues to goes up as rescue workers search for survivors. The massive earthquake also caused multiple buildings to collapse in Syria, leading to multiple deaths.

Russian Emergencies Ministry Aircraft Arrives in Earthquake-Hit Turkey
The Russian Emergencies Ministry's aircraft with Deputy Minister Alexander Chupriyan has arrived in Turkey, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

The An-148 aircraft with the ministry's top officials landed at Adana airport. Two additional planes with Russian rescuers are to arrive in Turkey are expected soon.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry said in a statement that more than 100 Russian rescuers arrived in Turkey to provide assistance following the devastating earthquakes that struck the region.

Biden Tells Erdogan US Ready to Provide Any, All Needed Aid After Quakes - White House
US President Joe Biden spoke by telephone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and said the United States will provide any assistance needed by Turkey following Monday's devastating earthquakes, the White House said in a readout of the conversation.

"President Joseph R. Biden spoke this afternoon with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey. He reaffirmed the readiness of the United States to provide any and all needed assistance to our NATO Ally Turkey in response to this tragedy," the readout said on Monday.

Biden also expressed condolences on behalf of the American people to all who lost loved ones or were injured in the earthquakes, the statement said.

In addition, Biden said specialized US teams are deploying quickly to support Turkish search and rescue efforts and to coordinate other assistance that may be required by people affected by the earthquakes.

Russian Rescuers Depart to Turkey to Help Deal With Earthquake Aftermath
The first plane of the Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) departed to Turkey to help in the aftermath of the earthquake, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the huge loss of life caused by the earthquake in #Türkiye and in #Syria. Entrusting those who have died to the loving mercy of the Almighty, I pray for the emergency personnel involved in the ongoing relief efforts," the head of the Catholic Church tweeted.
On behalf of the Pope, Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin sent telegrams to the Vatican's ambassadors in both countries affected by the disaster. These messages said that the Pope offers prayers for the souls of the dead and all those who mourn them. He also wishes emergency workers "the divine gifts of fortitude and perseverance."
Additionally, Pope Francis expressed "a renewed sign of his spiritual solidarity" for the "long-suffering Syrian people."

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar Assad, during which the leaders agreed that Russian rescue teams will soon fly to Syria to provide assistance in eliminating the consequences of the devastating earthquake, the Kremlin's press service reports.

"During a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his sincere condolences in connection with the consequences of the earthquake in northern Syria, which caused numerous human casualties, and offered to provide the Syrian side with the necessary assistance in eliminating the consequences of this disaster," the statement said.

The Syrian president, in turn, accepted Moscow's proposal.

"Bashar Assad accepted this offer with gratitude, and in the coming hours the rescue teams of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations will fly to Syria," the statement said.

MOSCOW, February 6 (Sputnik) - A new earthquake of 7.7 magnitude was recorded in central part of Turkey, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said on Monday.

The earthquake was recorded at 10:24 GMT, 59 kilometers northeast of the city of Kahramanmaras, at a depth of about 10 kilometers, the EMSC said.

According to a Sputnik correspondent, tremors from the earthquake were felt again in Ankara and its outskirts.

Erdogan Says Death Toll From Earthquake Increased to 912 People, Another 5,385 Injured
The death toll from a devastating earthquake in Turkey has risen to 912, while more than 5,000 people have been injured, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.

"So far, 912 people have died and 5,385 people have been injured, 2,470 people have been rescued," Erdogan said.

Ankara received assistance offers from over 45 countries after the earthquake, the president said, adding that more than 9,000 people are involved in rescue operations.
The earthquake of 7.7 magnitude that occurred in Turkey on Monday was the most powerful since 1939, Erdogan said.
"Tonight... we experienced the most powerful disaster that we have experienced in the last century after the earthquake in Erzincan in 1939," Erdogan said, speaking from the office for the coordination of work to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake.

Earlier in the day, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kahramanmaras province at 01:17 GMT.

Operations were also suspended in the Turkish port of Ceyhan due to the earthquake, Reuters reported later in the day, citing Turkish shipping agency Tribeca.
The airport in the city of Adana, located in southeastern Turkey, also suspended operation after the two earthquakes, according to the Turkish media.

Syria will engage its armed forces in eliminating the consequences of the Monday earthquake that led to the collapse of numerous buildings and multiple deaths, the Syrian Defense Ministry said.
"The Syrian Ministry of Defense is mobilizing all its units, formations and institutions in all provinces to provide emergency assistance to the victims of the earthquake, to search for people trapped under the rubble, as well as to provide assistance to the victims and eliminate the consequences of the destruction," the ministry wrote on Telegram.

The quake was felt in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, according to residents who spoke with Sputnik.
A source also told Sputnik that residential buildings collapsed or suffered damage in Syria's Latakia.
"As a result of the earthquake in the suburbs of Latakia, one building collapsed, several more suffered visible damage. Residents of the city and some settlements nearby took to the streets, fearing that their homes would collapse due to tremors," the source told Sputnik.
Local media reports suggest that the tremor was also felt in Damascus; Israelis in Tel Aviv also reported feeling the quake. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake was felt in Egypt, Georgia, and Romania.
