LIVE UPDATES: Turkey's Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 5,895 as Injured Tally Hits 34,810

The Syrian Health Ministry said on Wednesday that the death toll from the deadly earthquake in Syria has risen to 1,250, and 2,054 people have been injured.

"Syrian Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabbash said during a visit [to Latakia] that the death toll had risen to 1,250 and the number of injured to 2,054," the ministry said in a statement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to visit on Wednesday the zone of the devastating earthquake, which, according to the latest data, claimed the lives of about 5,500 people, a source in Ankara told Sputnik.

"On Wednesday, the president of Turkey is planning a visit to the regions where the earthquake occurred. In these difficult days for the country, the hearts of each of us beat as one. Mr. President will get acquainted with the situation on the ground and give his instructions," the source said.

The Russian servicemen continue rescue work in Syria after the devastating earthquake, having saved 42 people and having found another 57 people dead; almost 200 residents received medical assistance, Maj. Gen. Oleg Egorov, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in Syria, said at a briefing.

"In the course of rescue operations, with the involvement of military personnel of the Russian Armed Forces, 42 people were rescued from under rubble, 57 bodies of those dead were removed, medical assistance was provided to 194 residents," Egorov said at a briefing.

He clarified that four points for collecting donated blood had been deployed in Aleppo, Hama, Jabla, and Stamu. Local residents were given over 11 tonnes of food and essentials at eight humanitarian aid points.

"The Syrian state is ready to allow the delivery of aid to all regions, provided that it does not reach the terrorists," Mekdad said.

"At the moment, the death toll from the earthquake is 5,434, and 31,777 people have been injured," Koca told reporters.

"According to the latest information, 4,544 people died, 26,725 were injured," Tatar told reporters.

The graph attached to the message shows that after two powerful earthquakes, the frequency of shocks begins to decrease.

The Egyptian president also instructed to provide all necessary aid to Syria, the presidency said.

The telephone conversation between the Egyptian and Syrian presidents had been the first communication between the two leaders since Sisi came to power in Egypt in 2014.

Ankara has allocated more than $5 billion to eliminate the consequences of catastrophic earthquakes in the south-east of the country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"It was decided to allocate 100 billion liras [$5.3 billion] to our departments to eliminate the consequences of the disaster," Erdogan told a briefing.

Erdogan added that more than 53,000 people are involved in search and rescue operations in the earthquake zone in the country. Emergency services have provided more than 54,000 tents, 102,000 mattresses and other essential items to those affected by the natural disaster.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit central Turkey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said, clarifying the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred earlier Tuesday. The earthquake occurred at 03:13 GMT, at a depth of two kilometers (1.24 miles), five kilometers from the Golbasi area.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for three months in 10 provinces affected by the devastating earthquakes.

"We will rapidly complete the presidential and parliamentary processes regarding the decision on a state of emergency, which will last three months and cover 10 earthquake-affected provinces," Erdogan said in his address to the nation.

The earthquakes have affected 10 provinces with a total population of about 13 million people, the president added.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake has risen to 812 in Syria, while 1,449 people have been injured, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

"In the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama ... Idlib, Tartus, the number of victims increased to 812 people, and 1,449 were injured," the ministry said in a statement.

The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey currently stands at 3,549 people, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday.

"At least 3,549 are dead and 22,168 are wounded. The biggest consolation for us is that today more than 8,000 of our citizens have been rescued alive from the rubble," Erdogan said in his address to the nation.

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Turkey has reached 3,432, while another 21,103 people have been injured, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said on Tuesday.

"As of 12:10 [local time, 03:10 GMT], the earthquakes killed 3,432 people and injured 21,103 people," the AFAD said in a statement.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) urges the West to lift unilateral sanctions against Damascus to facilitate the process of eliminating the consequences of the earthquake, SARC President Khaled Hbubati.

"We call for lifting the blockade and economic sanctions imposed against Syria to eliminate the consequences of the devastating earthquake... we need heavy equipment, ambulances and fire crews to speed up search and rescue operations. To do this, it is necessary to lift sanctions from Syria as soon as possible," Hbubati said during a press conference.

The death toll in Monday's disastrous earthquake in Turkey has increased to 3,419, another 20,534 had been injured, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said.

"The number of victims has increased to 3,419 people, another 20,534 were injured," Oktay told a briefing.

The official added that weather conditions pose problems for the delivery of aid to the regions.

"Rescue teams of 12,181 people are working on the ground," Oktay said.

According to the vice president, Turkey has received assistance from 14 countries in connection with the earthquake at the moment.

UNESCO will invite its experts to assess the damage caused to the historical fortress of Gaziantep in Turkey and the citadel of Aleppo in Syria as a result of the earthquake, the organization's spokesman, Thomas Mallard said.

The historic Gaziantep Castle in Turkey and the Aleppo citadel in Syria, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, were hit by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on Monday morning.

"UNESCO will engage its experts, together with its partners, such as ICOMOS [International Council on Monuments and Sites] to compile an accurate damage assessment in order to quickly protect and stabilize these sites," Mallard said.

UNESCO is particularly concerned about the state of the Syrian city of Aleppo after the earthquake, as the citadel there has significant damage.

"The organization has carried out with its partners an initial assessment of heritage damage. In Syria, UNESCO is particularly concerned about the condition of the ancient city of Aleppo, which is on the List of World Heritage and is under threat. Significant damage is observed in the citadel," Mallard added.

He noted that the western tower in the old part of the city had collapsed and there were several buildings whose structures had been damaged and weakened.

"At the moment, we have 3,381 victims, 20,436 injured," Tatar told reporters.

A total of 5,575 buildings have been destroyed as a result of the earthquake, the official added.

According to Martynov, Russian rescuers have brought all the equipment they need, including the latest: endoscopes, instruments to search for people at depths of up to 4.5 meters, and rescue equipment. Russian psychologists and medics will also work on the site.

An Iranian plane with 45 tonnes of aid for those affected by Monday's earthquake in Syria has landed at Damascus airport, Syrian state news agency reported.
