This week marked a century since the Representation of the People Act was passed in Britain in 1918, when the right to vote was first granted to women in the UK with certain property qualifications. Only 40% of the female population qualified, which equaled to 8.5 million women.

The fight for women's suffrage was led by activists, who would engage in window-smashing, rock-throwing and other forms of protest. More than 1,300 suffragette women were arrested according to the England, Suffragettes Arrested, 1906-1914 collection, during their strife for empowerment.
