The official noted that Russian aircraft never approached closer than 150 miles.

Another defense official said the Russian bombers did not enter the air defense identification zone, a part of the international airspace in which aircraft are required to comply with a country's identification procedures.

Russia's Pacific Fleet is reported to have held military drills in the central Pacific earlier in the month, with about twenty submarines and surface vessels, as well as anti-submarine aircraft, participating.
