Six people were killed in the shooting in Russia's Perm State University, while 24 others are receiving medical assistance after the incident, the ministry of health said on Monday.
"According to the updated information of the federal centre for emergency medicine, six people were killed in the incident in the Perm State University. The 24 injured people are receiving medical assistance," the Russian Ministry of Health said in a statement.
The perpetrator, who was identified as a student, put up resistance during detention and was wounded, the investigative committee's spokeswoman, Svetlana Petrenko, said.
A criminal investigation was initiated, the spokeswoman added.
A police officer wounded the Perm shooter, approached him and then disarmed him; after that, he provided first aid to the culprit, Russia's Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs said that the attacker was detained.
"This morning, police officers on duty received a message about shots heard on the territory of the Perm State National Research University. According to preliminary information, there are fatalities and injuries ... The attacker was detained by police officers," the ministry said in a statement.
The emergency services said that a plane with the necessary medical equipment had left Moscow for Perm to provide assistance to those injured.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been informed about the shooting at Perm State University and has extended his condolences, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has tapped the head of the Ministry of Education and Science to go to the city of Perm following the shooting incident.
In the meantime, Russia's VK social network has deleted a post on the attack by the suspect and blocked his account following the shooting.
