Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane told reporters that 12 people had been transported to area hospitals, while another victim checked themselves into a hospital. One person has died, and the shooter is also dead, possibly of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found at the rear of the store, and his car was parked in the parking lot.
He said little other information was available about the age of the victims or whether the shooter was an employee of the store.
Video filmed outside the grocery store in a suburb of Memphis captured the sound of a gunshot just seconds before police arrive on the scene.

Videos on social media also showed a person standing on the roof of the Kroger with their arms raised as police arrived. While social media users wondered whether it was the shooter, police later confirmed the person was a store employee who was working on the roof when the shooting started.
Fox 13 noted nearby Collierville High School had been placed on lockdown. However, Lane did not say if there was another shooter or if they were believed to still be active.

"This is a horrible day in Collierville", Dale said. "Our hearts go out to the victims, families, and friends involved in the senseless tragedy. Please keep our community in your thoughts and prayers. At this time, there are no known threats to the Collierville community and our department is working diligently to prevent further violence".

According to a media release by the department, their investigation has been joined by state and federal police agencies.
