According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, a 6.3-magnitude quake was registered on Tuesday, 120 kilometres from the city of Heraklion, Greece.
Following the earthquake, Greek seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos warned that a small tsunami will hit the southern part of Crete, saying that local residents and tourists should be evacuated.
The region lies in a seismologically active region as the Mediterranean Sea is a border between the African and Eurasian plates. As a result, Greece, Turkey, and other countries experience frequent tremors: a year ago, a powerful quake in the Aegean Sea claimed at least 27 lives and injured around 800 people.
