Officials with the Washington Metropolitan Police Department were initially alerted to a suspicious package at about 4:45 p.m. local time, with law enforcement authorities later cordoning off the area for the next roughly 4 hours.
Among the first responders was an explosive ordnance disposal unit for the police department, which was able to clear the package without difficulties. Details of the concerning package have not yet been released.
Earlier, video from the scene showed a significant police presence on the embassy grounds.
It remains unclear whether any persons of interest have been identified in the matter.
