In late November, Russia's Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology said it has begun developing a new version of the Sputnik vaccine specifically against the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
Earlier this week, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control predicted that Omicron will likely overtake Delta to become the dominant coronavirus strain in Europe in early 2022. Last month, the World Health Organisation labelled Omicron a "variant of concern" as the new coronavirus strain started spreading rapidly across the globe.
