A blast occurred in Zagreb on Friday after an unidentified object fell from the sky in one area of Croatia's capital, the country's Interior Ministry has said.
The ministry tweeted that "after 23:00 [22:00 GMT Thursday], the Zagreb Police Department received several calls from citizens that a detonation was felt in the Jarun area, and an object fell from the area before that. Units were urgently sent to the place, who found a crater on Jarunska Street...there were two parachutes [found] nearby, we also received reports about it earlier".
No one was hurt as a result of the explosion, which damaged several cars parked nearby, the police said, adding that the crash site is currently being cordoned off.
Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic, for his part, said that there were "no indications that this was a deliberate action" when talking about the crash of the unidentified object in the Croatian capital.
The statement came amid reports that the unidentified object may be a Soviet-made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) arriving from Ukraine.
According to the examined photos and videos from the site, the crashed craft may be a Soviet Tupolev Tu-141 Strizh reconnaissance drone that flew from Ukraine, the Croatian news portal Index.hr reported on Friday.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, in turn, said that it remains unclear who owned the alleged drone.
"We spoke with the head of the Interior Ministry, the minister of defence, the deputy prime minister for national security, the mayor of Zagreb, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban […]. We don't know now whether the UAV belonged to the Russian or Ukrainian army", Plenkovich told reporters.
Since 24 February, Russia has been conducting a special military operation in Ukraine aimed at demilitarising and de-Nazifying the country.
