Former US President Barack Obama has tested positive for COVID-19, the two-term commander-in-chief revealed Sunday. It remains unclear whether he is presently in isolation.
His wife, the former first lady, Michelle Obama, tested negative for the contagious disease.
"I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple days, but am feeling fine otherwise," Obama said in a Sunday afternoon tweet. "Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted, and she has tested negative."
Obama emphasized that his diagnosis serve as a reminder for Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Former US President Donald Trump was reportedly hospitalized in October 2020 after testing positive for COVID-19. According to the New York Times, many believed the then-US president would be put on a ventilator, as Trump's blood oxygen levels were reported to have dipped. Trump reportedly has a lung condition linked to pneumonia.
The US has logged more than 967,500 COVID-19-related deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, and has recorded over 79.5 million cases of the contagious disease.
On Thursday, March 10, the number of hospitalized COVID-19-positive Americans fell below 30,000 for the first time since July 2021.
