Ex-Prime Minister of Bulgaria Borissov Detained During Police Operation

Earlier, ex-Prime Minister and leader of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Boyko Borissov and other members of the former ruling party were investigated for misuse of European funds.

Former Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov was detained during a police operation, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reported late on Thursday, citing sources from law enforcement. The arrests were said to be related to reports, claiming that European prosecutors are investigating more than 120 cases of misuse of European funds in Bulgaria.
Searches and seizures are said to have been conducted at many addresses. Apart from Borisov, several other high-ranked members of GERB were reportedly detained, including former Minister of Finance Vladislav Goranov, former head of the parliamentary budget commission Menda Stoyanova and former head of the government press service Sevdalina Arnaudova.
The current Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov, reacted to the arrests, tweeting “No one is above the law.”
The day before, the head of the European prosecutor's office, Laura Kovesi, said at a briefing in Sofia that they had received data on more than 120 cases of abuse of European funds in Bulgaria. She clarified that among the main accusations is abuse of funds received from the European Union related to state orders, subsidies for agricultural development and funds allocated for reconstruction after the coronavirus pandemic.
