Casio has added sports watches to their new model line made using biomass plastics, based on materials like castor beans and corn.
Eco-friendly biomass plastics have been used in parts - particularly the case, band, and case back cover of the Pro Trek PRW-6611Y-1 and PRW-6621Y-1. The company believes the new material will help reduce the environmental burden with less carbon dioxide emissions.
Still, the new "green" G-Shock watches are up-to-date like their plastic equivalents: they use photovoltaic cells to keep their batteries charged, are water resistant to 100 metres, and feature full auto LED lights. They also offer world time, a stopwatch, five programmable alarms, and sensors including an altimeter, barometer, and thermometer.
This is not the first attempt by the Japanese watch company to take steps towards a "greener" future: in February this year, it presented to the public the solar-powered sports watch PRW-61, produced with the same materials, and packaged entirely in paper.
The new eco-friendly watches are currently only available in Japan, with a price tag of 57,200 yen (about $450).
