US Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced that the US Justice Department would support legislation allowing the United States government to use funds obtained from seized Russian assets to aid Ukraine.

"We would support legislation that would allow some of that money to go directly to Ukraine", Garland said during a congressional hearing on Tuesday.

Previously, Kiev suggested that it regards the frozen Russian assets as a potential source of financial assistance for Ukraine.
A significant portion of Russia's international reserves ended up being frozen after the United States and its allies enacted economic sanctions against Russia over Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.

The said operation was launched on 24 February in response to calls from the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk for help in countering intensifying attacks by Ukrainian troops.
The Russian government stated that the goal of the operation is to neutralise Ukraine's military capacity, with precision strikes being carried out specifically against Ukrainian military infrastructure.
