French football club Lyon defeated the Spanish Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League on Saturday.
The finals match, held in Turin, Italy, ended with the 3:1 score in Lyon's favor. For the French club, goals were scored by Amandine Henry in the 6th minute, Ada Hegerberg in the 23rd and Katarina Macario in the 33rd. Winner of the 2021 Ballon D'Or Alexia Putellas scored the sole goal for Barcelona in the 41st minute.
Henry scored with a stunning shot before unleashing a rocket that Spanish goalkeeper Sandra Panos could only reach in vain. Lyon went into overdrive after that, and Hegerberg scored her 59th goal in 60 Champions League games, easily nodding in French player Selma Bacha's close-range cross.
Barca was indeed looking somewhat doomed, but then Putellas hauled her team back into the game four minutes before halftime when she saved Norwegian winger Caroline Graham Hansen's misdirected cross with a low first-time finish.
Barcelona then put everything they had at Lyon, including an audacious shot from Patricia Guijarro from close to halfway that smacked the crossbar, but Lyon held fast to ultimately recapture the European title.
