Another riot has broken out at the Social Bellavista rehabilitation center in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, located in northern Ecuador.
Ecuador's National Service for Attention to Prisoners (SNAI) tweeted on Monday that with the help of Ecuador's National Police and Ecuador's Armed Forces, they were able to regain control of the facility, however at least 13 people are dead and two more are injured, they've said.
In early May of this year, a similar incident occurred when a prison riot between two rival gangs broke out leaving at least 44 dead and 13 injured. Following the fight in May, authorities found firearms, explosives and other weapons.
Towards the end of last year, the SNAI received $30 million from the central government solely for the purposes of improving "infrastructure and strengthening of surveillance" across Ecuador's prisons. The government of Ecuador has a four year restructuring plan for their prisons, with $74 million to be allocated to their facilities.
