US Using 'Fabrications and Lies' as Excuse to Target Syria - Damascus

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has reacted to Trump's tweet on "smart missiles" and plans on airstrikes, saying that it was not surprised by the "thoughtless" US escalation around the alleged chemical attack, according to the SANA.

We are not surprised by such a thoughtless escalation by a regime like the United States regime, which sponsored terrorism in Syria and still does. The US condones their fabrications and lies to use them as a pretext to target Syria," state news agency SANA cited a source at the Foreign Ministry as saying.

A similar stance has been expressed by Syria's Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari. He underlined that threats to launch an attack on Syria from Western states will not prevent Damascus from preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity and from facing any aggression regardless of its source.

He emphasized that Syria will not allow any of the permanent or non-permanent UN member states to do in Syria what they have done in Iraq or Libya.

"The US representative said that there is a single monster today which stands in the face of the whole world, and it is a monster which has armed and financed terrorists for more than seven years in Syria, and I say that this monster is the US, Britain, and France who sponsored terrorism in Syria and before it in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya," al-Jaafari said.

He stated that Syria welcomes the OPCW experts, concerning the alleged chemical attack in Douma city, stressing that Syria expects they will perform the work with "transparency and professionalism based on credible evidence."

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has asked the Syrian government to take measures for the deployment of a fact-finding mission to the Syrian city of Douma to establish facts surrounding the alleged used of chemical weapons in the area.

The experts will investigate the reports that appeared in early April, when several media outlets, citing Syrian militants, accused Damascus of carrying out a chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma.

Trump blamed Damascus for the reported attack and in a phone conversation with Theresa May focused on the issue of the reported chemical weapons use in Douma.
