UNSC Fails to Adopt Russia-Drafted Resolution Condemning Western Attack on Syria

Russia has introduced the draft resolution condemning the missile strikes against Syria and calling on the US and its allies to immediately stop aggression, according to the Russian mission to the UN.

Voting on the document was held during a Security Council meeting, initiated by Russia after the US, France and Britain struck Syria last night. The document was backed by Russia, China and Bolivia. Eight countries opposed, while four delegations abstained from voting.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom, the United States and France launched airstrikes at Syria over reports of a chemical attack in the city of Douma.

Damascus has rejected all the allegations, noting that all chemical stockpiles were destroyed, which was confirmed by the OPCW. No evidence of Damascus' involvement in the reported chemical incident was presented, with a probe due to start on April 14.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the three countries fired over 100 cruise as well as air-to-surface missiles.

Unverified reports about an alleged chemical incident appeared in the social media, citing sources among militants, on April 7.
