The deadly incident reportedly took place in the vicinity of the city's largest hotel, the Tibesi. The car reportedly exploded in a busy shopping street full of people taking an evening stroll.

Benghazi is Libya's second-largest city, controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA), which was battling Islamists, including some allegedly linked to Daesh and al-Qaeda, until late last year.

The eastern part of the crisis-torn state is governed by its parliament, with headquarters in the city of Tobruk. The parliament is backed by the Libyan National Army, which is engaged in struggle against militants. At the same time, the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), headed by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, operates in the country's west and is headquartered in Tripoli.
