Ronaldo Strikes Deal With Spain's Tax Authorities for 3.2 Mln Euro Fine

The Portugal star, who recently signed with the Turin, Italy-based FC Juventus, has reached a deal with Spanish tax authorities to pay a 3.2 million euro (3.7 million dollar) fine, the prosecutor said.

This amount only represents a portion of what Ronaldo owes as part of the tax evasion case. Last year, Ronaldo was accused of defrauding the Spanish Treasury of 14.7 million euros (17 million dollars) in taxes in the period from 2011 to 2014. However, the amount of taxes Ronaldo owes has been reduced to 5.7 million euros (6.6 million dollars). However, interest and court fees have brought the final sum that the football player will have to pay to 19 million euros (22 million dollars).

Previously, media reports suggested the football player had agreed with Spanish prosecutors to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced two-year prison sentence which he is likely to avoid since Spanish judges are entitled to suspend jail time of two years or less for first-time offenders. In addition, the deal stipulated that Ronaldo would have to pay a fine of about 19 million euros (22 million dollars).
