Tomato Battle: Renowned La Tomatina Fest Held in Spain

"Tomatina" is a festival in which thousands of people throw tomatoes at each other. The less-than-killer attacks take place in the town of Bunol, just a few kilometers from Valencia. 145 metric tons of tomatoes were brought there for the occasion. The tomato battle lasts for several hours, after which the town's streets run red with tomato mush.

The signal invoking the commencement of the battle is a special firecracker, launched on Wednesday at 11 o'clock from the town hall.

Following this sign, several trucks appear on the streets of the city, loaded with the real protagonists of the holiday — ripe tomatoes, which become ready projectiles.
