Japan's Abe Wins Party Leadership Vote, Retains Position of Prime Minister

TOKYO (Sputnik) - Shinzo Abe was re-elected on Thursday the president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for the third term therefore retaining his position as the Japanese prime minister.

The voting was broadcast by the NHK broadcaster.

Abe managed to secure the majority of votes as a total of 553 party members cast their votes for him, while his opponent Shigeru Ishiba was backed by 254 members of the ruling party.

The politician has been serving as the country's prime minister since 2012 and has been reelected twice.
