The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) member states elected Japan with 92 votes, while closest runner-up, Russia's Yekaterinburg, received a total of 61 votes.

Earlier this year, Osaka made its official bid for the Expo on April 24, 2017, with the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives".
The Japanese city already hosted EXPO in 1970.
