Six people were killed and one was detained as a result of a security operation conducted in Saudi Arabia's eastern Al-Qatif province on Monday, according to the reports.

"[The security forces] carried out an operation to prevent a criminal attempt to disturb the operation of critical infrastructure facilities in the Qatif district in the eastern part of the country. Six terrorists were killed," the representative of the security forces said, as quoted by the Al Ekhbariya broadcaster.

Five Saudi security officers were slightly injured during the operation, according to the representative of the law enforcement body.

The officers also found seven assault rifles, three grenades and a lot of ammunition in the house used by the criminals as a shelter.

Al-Arabiya cited its sources as saying the suspects were not in a declared wanted criminals list, though they were involved in cases that affected the Kingdom's security.

Saudi Arabia's State Security Presidency is yet to comment on the incident.

The eastern regions of Saudi Arabia are populated with the Shiite minority that is averse to the country's authorities. Moreover, attacks on security forces often occur there.
