Pakistan Provides Consular Access to Indian Citizens in its Jails

India has 98 Pakistani fishermen and 249 other Pakistani civilians in its prisons, while Pakistan has imprisoned 483 Indian fishermen and 54 other Indian civilians, as per figures shared by both countries with each other on regular basis.

New Delhi (Sputnik): Pakistan has agreed to provide consular access to 102 Indian prisoners lodged in various prisons across the country, top sources in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad told Sputnik.

Out of the 102 prisoners, 100 are lodged in Karachi prison while 2 are in Rawalpindi.


"Pakistan has provided the details of the Indian prisoners who are currently lodged in their prisons and we have verified their whereabouts in India," an official working with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad told Sputnik.

"In fact, we have also conveyed the details of their (Pakistani) prisoners to the Pakistani authorities," the official added.

India and Pakistan shared the latest list of prisoners in each other's custody on 1 January 2019. According to the Consular Access Agreement of 21 May 2008, both India and Pakistan share the list of prisoners lodged in each other's jails twice a year; on 1 January and 1 July.
