Blast in Center of Egyptian Capital of Cairo Leaves 2 Police Officers Dead

CAIRO (Sputnik) - An explosion occurred on Monday in the center of the Egyptian capital of Cairo near the Al-Azhar University, Sky News Arabia television reported.

According to Sky News Arabia, the explosion occurred when the police chased a suspect. The explosion left two police officers and the terrorist dead, the local interior ministry reported.

According to local newspapers quoted by Reuters, the man blew himself up. There were no immediate reports on any casualties or damage caused by the explosion.

"The security forces surrounded him and after the terrorist was detained, one of the explosive devices detonated," the statement said, adding that the explosion killed the terrorist and two police officers.

The ministry added that the blast also left three police officers injured.
