"Russia is a peace-loving state, we are pursuing a responsible foreign policy, striving to strengthen the global stability. We will continue to strengthen the country's defense potential, develop and modernize its armed forces," Putin said at the start of a concert celebrating the Defender of the Fatherland Day.

"Ensuring the security of Russia, of our citizens, remains an absolute priority for us," Putin stressed.

Speaking further, the head of state said that Russian weapons would likely stay ahead of their rivals for a long time.

"We are focused on re-equipping troops with the most advanced weapons and the most modern means of control and communications. Our weapon prototypes are unparalleled, at least for now, and I think it will be that way for a long time," he said.

Putin added this military edge was the result of efforts by a large team of scientists, engineers and the government, who guaranteed Russia's security and development for decades to come.

The president was speaking ahead of a concert at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow dedicated to this Saturday's Defenders Day.

Earlier this week, Vladimir Putin said that competing interests between Russia and the United States were not a legitimate reason to rehash old historical conflicts thrusting the world into crisis.

During his annual address to Russian lawmakers, Putin warned the US not to deploy medium and short-range nuclear missiles in Europe, saying it would "dramatically exacerbate the international security situation" and create serious challenges to Russia.
