At Least 6 Killed, 12 Injured in Blast at Chemical Plant in East China (VIDEO)

MOSCOW(Sputnik) - At least 12 people who were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in eastern China’s Jiangsu province on Thursday have been rescued by firefighters, the local fire department said in a post on its official Weibo account.

"At around 2:52 p.m. on March 21, the fire department of Xiangshui County in Yancheng city received reports of an explosion at the Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Co., Ltd. … Eighty-six fire trucks and 389 firefighters have been deployed to the scene. The firefighters have rescued 12 of those injured so far," the Jiangsu province fire department said in its post on Weibo.

The official China Central Television (CCTV) reported earlier in the day that an explosion took place at around 2:50 p.m. (6:50 GMT) local time at a chemical plant in the city of Yancheng, Jiangsu province. Within an hour, the fire was brought under control and local environmental protection officials have initiated emergency monitoring procedures, the broadcaster added.

​Videos and pictures, circulated on Weibo, showed windows and doors of residential buildings located close to the chemical plant were completely shattered.

The China Earthquake Networks Center has said on its official Weibo account that it detected a 2.2 magnitude earthquake at 2:48 p.m. local time at the site of the blast.
