According to conflicting reports, there are from 12 to 17 injured people, while authorities have yet to comment on the roadside bomb attack.
Photos and a video shared via Twitter show the outcome of the explosion.
The nationalities of those injured haven't been officially disclosed yet, though, according to Sky News Arabia, the injured people include ten Egyptian nationals and seven tourists from South Africa.
The Russian Embassy in Cairo said that there are no Russian citizens among those injured.
Egypt's security services have started to search for those responsible for the explosion. They also conducted searches in the area of the incident, looking for possible explosives.
No terror group has claimed responsibility for the incident yet.
Earlier this year, the Egyptian Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry launched Comprehensive Operation — Sinai, a major anti-terrorist offensive. Since then, hundreds of militants were killed and detained.
The attack comes as the Egyptian tourism sector is recovering following years of crisis that followed the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that ended with the toppling of then-leader Hosni Mubarak.
