UK's Environment Minister Michael Gove Announces He Will Run For Prime Minister

UK's Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation on Friday as the Tory leader on 7 June but will continue serving as prime minister until a new party leader is chosen.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove said that he would be running to replace Theresa May as British Prime Minister, according to Sky News.

"I can confirm that I will be putting my name forward to be prime minister of this country," Gove said as quoted by Sky News.

"I believe that I'm ready to unite the Conservative and Unionist Party, ready to deliver Brexit, and ready to lead this great country," he added.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation on the morning of 24 May. She will remain head of the UK government until her successor is chosen.

The United Kingdom was initially supposed to leave the European Union on 29 March. The parties have agreed on a withdrawal deal, but Parliament has refused to pass it with the arrangement to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland being one of the main points of concern for the MPs.

Brussels then subsequently moved the deadline for London to 31 October.
