US President Donald Trump slammed Sunday in a series of tweets the US-based media over "phony and exaggerated" coverage of the conditions in the US border detention facilities.

Trump also blamed the Democrats for denying the migration crisis on the US southern border.

The US president also said that the "loopholes" in the country's migration legislation that "the Dems won't change" have created the tense situation at the US border.

Earlier this week, Trump enacted humanitarian assistance bill worth of $4.6 billion on the southwestern border as federal agencies struggle to cope with the influx of migrants.

CBP agents reportedly encountered more than 144,000 illegal immigrants on the United States’ border with Mexico in May - the highest monthly total in 13 years.

On Monday, a group of US lawmakers visited detention facilities on the US-Mexico border after reports emerged that Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) had failed to provide detainees with adequate food, water and sanitary supplies.

CBP Chief of Law Enforcement Operations Brian Hastings has reportedly told the Senate Homeland Security Committee that they were providing migrants with sanitation supplies and food, which contradicts the US-based media reports alleging poor living conditions at the detention facilities.

Caravans of migrants from Central American countries seeking asylum began moving toward the United States through Mexico last fall. Trump has called the surge of arrivals a crisis and declared a national emergency in February to secure funds for constructing a border wall to help stop illegal immigration.
