The Sant Sebastia beach in Barcelona has been evacuated after police found an explosive device in the water, a Spanish Civil Guard spokeswoman told Reuters.

The device was reportedly found about 40 metres from the shore by a member of the Civil Guard's Special Group for Underwater Activities. As BTV reported, a group of divers have already started working at the site.

The beach in Barcelona will be cordoned off at least until 26 August until the Spanish Navy arrive at the site where the explosive device was discovered, the Civil Guard said.

According to unconfirmed information, the device may be an explosive from the Second World War.
