The air defences have repelled an attack by unmanned aerial vehicles that were supposedly launched by militants at Russia's Hmeymim airbase in Syria, Syrian Ikhbariya broadcaster reported.

The reports say that explosions were heard in Syria's Latakia region as anti-aircraft defences intercepted drones attacking the base.

Later, Russian Defence Ministry reported that two terrorists' drones were spotted near Hmeymim airbase approaching from north-west Tuesday evening and were destroyed at a safe distance.

There was no damage or casualties as a result of the incident, the ministry said.

Over the past several weeks, terrorists have increased the number of attacks in Syria's north-western provinces, particularly Idlib and Latakia.

Russia, Turkey and Iran are the ceasefire guarantors in conflict-torn Syria. Russia carries out humanitarian operations across the country on a regular basis and helps Damascus in providing safe passage for the return of Syrian refugees.
