The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria has refused to comment on the incident involving its diplomat, while he was recently expelled from the country over the accusations of espionage.
Following a statement by the country’s prosecutor general that they would drop the espionage charges against the diplomat due to his status, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry demanded that Moscow recall the diplomat. According to the news agency Focus, the Russian official in question has already left the country.
Bulgarian authorities earlier announced the commencement of a criminal investigation into a Russian diplomat over allegedly spying for Moscow and collecting sensitive classified data. The person had allegedly been involved in these activities since September 2018, according to the country's prosecutors. Moscow hasn't commented on the accusations.
